Is Immune Depression Linked to Aging?17 Jun
As the human body enters its senior years, its ability to fight off infection and other health problems diminishes significantly. The immune system, which is responsible for fighting infection, simply does not function as efficiently in older adults as in younger people, according to research from the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Other sources agree that there is a direct connection between aging and immune function. The University of Pennsylvania Health System suggests the immune system loses its ability to fight off infection as you grow older. Flu shots or other immunizations may not work as well, and protection may not last as long as expected. Common problems associated with older immune systems include increased infection risk, decreased ability to fight diseases, slowed healing of wounds, auto-immune disease and other illnesses.
The thymus gland may be one culprit for these changes. Part of the immune system, the thymus is the site where certain immune cells called T lymphocytes (T cells) mature. The thymus begins to shrink after adolescence. By middle age it is only 15 percent of its maximum size.
Here are some suggestions for maintaining a healthy immune system after age 50:
- Exercise
- A well-balanced diet
- Quitting or avoiding smoking
- Limited alcohol consumption
- Safety measures to avoid falls and other injuries
New research conducted in Kiev, Ukraine demonstrates the positive impact Del-Immune V® has on the immune system. The product is available for anyone who wants to cultivate healthy immune function and is safe for older adults.
“Immune depression is more common as we get older,” said Dr. Roger Mazlan of Roslyn, NY. “The immune system ages with the rest of the body, but it depends on a person’s genetics. People can get into problems with malnutrition as well, but there is more degenerative disease in the elderly.”
Dr. Mazlan said he has recommended Del-Immune V® to over 500 patients and is delighted with the positive immune response he has seen.
