Steve Sanderlin, DVM, is a veterinarian with holistic animal training. Dr. Sanderlin practices in Boulder County, Colorado, and attended veterinary school at Texas A&M. Dr. Sanderlin will answer questions about use of Del-Immune V® in animals, and can be contacted at SSandvm@aol.com

I’ve observed that with many animal health issues, there is an underlying compromised and depressed immune system. After being introduced to Del-immune V, I started recommending it for pets to provide immune support in conjunction with targeted treatment of many health issues. My clinical observation was that the product provided immediate immune support during all types of animal health issues, whether the condition was fungal, bacterial or viral.

In broad terms, we see a faster recovery rate with health issues when an animal’s immune system is supported with Del-Immune V. Another important characteristic I have observed is that this product modulates and balances rather than over-stimulating the immune system. This is important for animals with hyper-sensitivities. There are variables, but I have also seen the product help balance an over-active immune system.

Del-Immune V is ideal for immune support with many treatment protocols I recommend, and I have never observed side-effects from the product. I use it to support the immune system adjunctively during treatments including; cancer, ear and eye infections, respiratory tract infections and skin conditions to name a few. The product is cost effective and gives a big return for a small investment in a pet’s health.

Young puppies and kittens from shelters and mills frequently show up with respiratory infections and immune stress. Adding immune support to specific prescription treatment gets them back on track faster.

On the more life-threatening end of the spectrum, I see dogs with chronic, debilitating illness like cancer. I have observed that supporting the immune system with Del-Immune V during treatment helps the body fight cancer cells and also provides help with secondary immune problems relating to bacterial and fungal infections.

My best results are dose-related. For general maintenance in puppies and cats, I use half a capsule to a full capsule twice a day. For acute immune issues, smaller animals receive up to four capsules a day. With adult cat and small dogs, I suggest one to two capsules daily for maintenance, and up to six a day for immune support during acute problems. Medium and large dogs can have two capsules a day for maintenance and six to eight capsules a day during acute illness. I give very large dogs two Del-Immune V a day for maintenance, and up to four capsules twice a day during acute illness. Users can reduce doses after about two weeks.

The largest dose I’ve given for immune support was eight capsules a day to a chocolate lab with prostate cancer. In addition to cancer treatment, the dog’s immune system was supported with additional supplements and a grain-free diet. This pup had a high quality of life for more than a year after his diagnosis, in spite of the fact that dogs with this condition would typically live six months or less.

The October 2008 issue of Science Daily reported that, “Studies presented at the American College of Gastroenterology’s 73rd Annual Scientific Meeting highlight the safety and efficacy of probiotics in improving symptoms and normalizing bowel movement frequency in patients suffering from constipation or diarrhea related to IBS.”

“A systematic review of the efficacy of probiotics in IBS that included 19 randomized controlled trials in 1,628 IBS patients found that probiotics are effective in IBS, but we do not have enough information to be sure whether there is one probiotic that is particularly effective or whether combinations of probiotics are required,” said Dr. Paul Moayyedi, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, NY.

What is IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder of abdominal discomfort or pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. This discomfort, pain, or cramping can be a dull ache or it can be severe, according to IBSanswers.net, a web resource for those who suffer from IBS.

Types of IBS

Doctors distinguish different forms of IBS based on bowel patterns reported by patients. Some people with IBS suffer from constipation, diarrhea, or both.2 Symptoms can vary by person, but the three types of IBS are:

• IBS with constipation

• IBS with diarrhea

• Mixed IBS with both constipation and diarrhea

Affecting 25 to 55 million people in the United States, IBS results in 2.5 to 3.5 million yearly visits to physicians. Twenty to 40 percent of all visits to gastroenterologists are due to symptoms of irritable bowel. Not surprisingly, dozens of research studies have been conducted in search of answers about IBS, and how to minimize the discomfort associated with this common syndrome. Several studies have examined probiotics, meaning the “friendly” bacteria that reside in our intestinal tracts. The findings of these studies indicate that probiotics may play a role in treating and preventing IBS.

The British Nutrition Foundation carried out a review of probiotics and health in 2008. The review states that, “Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms have been found to be reduced by consuming probiotics.”

Research published in the March, 2009 issue of Postgraduate Medicine concluded that after an eight-week study, probiotics could, “Improve the severity and frequency of symptoms associated with IBS.”

“The role of the enteric flora is evidently an area of great potential in IBS; we are on the threshold of a new era of research and therapy for this common disorder” said Dr. E.M. Quigley of the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre of the National University of Ireland.

Why do probiotics work for IBS?

Probiotics have had more than a century to prove themselves. The concept first emerged in 1907, when Elie Metchnikoff, the Nobel Prize winning scientist, attributed the longevity of a Bulgarian peasant village to its inhabitants’ consumption of live yogurt. Since then a number of well designed clinical trials have shown beneficial effects of probiotics in the treatment of travelers’ diarrhea, acute diarrhea in children and antibiotic associated diarrhea. Trials also suggest that such bacteria can have a beneficial effect on the immune system, as reported on the helpforibs.com website.

Some researchers theorize that one cause of IBS may have to do with the bacteria, or “flora” balance of the intestinal tract. These scientists think that when “good” and “bad” bacteria get out of balance, the good bacteria can no longer manage the bad bacteria populations. If bad bacteria overwhelm good, this may cause inflammation, diarrhea, and other symptoms of IBS. This condition is called “SIBO,” or “Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth.” Regular doses of “good bacteria,” or probiotics, may help to regulate, balance and control overgrowth of “bad bacteria.”

Many of our customers have contacted us for more information on Delpro™, our live probiotic product. Question topics include whether Delpro should be refrigerated, and whether traveling through the mail system damages the product. Probiotics are living organisms and should be refrigerated when stored, but Delpro is manufactured in such a way that an excess of live CFU’s, or “colony-forming units” are built into each dose. This means that even if some of the CFUs are lost during transit, Delpro still delivers 10 billion CFU’s per dose by the time it reaches customers. We know that Delpro can remain unrefrigerated for up to 30 days, so travelers may carry Delpro when refrigeration is not available.

Since my first experience with Del-Immune V®, I have advised it for many medical conditions and found it to be helpful. Not everyone who takes Del-Immune V® has dramatic results, but I have not had anybody experience any side effects, either. I recommend it for any autoimmune condition, including rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. I also suggest it for chronic infections like Hepatitis C.

When treating Hepatitis C, I have combined Del-Immune V® with a Chinese formula that contains milk thistle. One of my patients has decreased his viral load from 70,000 to 600 after three months on Del-Immune V®. Even Ribaviran, the interferon-based treatment currently in use for Hepatitis C, is not expected to show that much change or impact on the virus in the human body.

About 50 percent of my patients with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue showed improvement when taking Del-Immune V® as a supplement to their treatment. The patients claimed they had more energy and generally felt better.

If it seems like it’s just harder to roll out of bed every morning when the temperature drops and sunrise comes later, you’re not imagining things – and you’re not alone. Whether they have chronic fatigue, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or an old-fashioned case of the seasonal blues, many people experience fatigue when seasons change and the weather cools.

Fatigue is common, with up to 50 percent of adults reporting feeling chronically tired according to several recent surveys. In fact, at least 20 percent of doctor visits are made by people looking for relief from fatigue, one study reports. The season’s effect on fatigue and depression is well-known, with the American Academy of Family Physicians reporting six out of every 100 Americans suffer from winter depression or SAD.

“Shorter days, darker skies, colder weather, poor sleep habits, and the stresses that come with the busy holidays and months at the end of the year can leave many people feeling fatigued and depressed at this time of year,” says Dr. Elin Ritchie, a specialist in family alternative medicine.

Even if your case of the seasonal blues is mild, it still makes sense to take steps to help yourself feel better – prolonged fatigue and depression can affect your overall health. Here are some tips for fighting fatigue:

Get as much (safe) sun exposure as possible. Open drapes and blinds as soon as you get up to allow sunlight into your home. If you can, take a morning walk. Get as much time outdoors as your schedule and the weather permit. Sunlight stimulates the production of vitamin D in your body and also benefits your mental health. Remember, though, to use sunscreen, as the sun’s ultraviolet rays can still damage your skin, even in winter.

Stick to a reliable sleep schedule as much as possible. Go to bed and rise at the same time every day. And make sure your bedroom is conducive to sleep – declutter, choose comfortable and comforting linens, and turn off the TV.

Choose foods that are high in protein. Fruits and vegetables provide many healthful benefits and definitely belong in your diet. But for long-lasting energy, you’ll get more benefit from lean protein (like chicken and fish) and complex carbohydrates such as whole-grain bread or beans. Avoid too much sugar, no matter how tempting those holiday treats appear – sugar’s energy rush is usually followed by an energy drop that can leave you feeling more fatigued.

Find ways to relax. The cooler seasons can be a very stressful time and stress can keep you awake at night. To combat natural levels of stress, find activities that relax you, whether it’s container gardening indoors, meditation or aromatherapy. Relieving stress can help improve sleep patterns.

It’s also important that you support your immune system, especially during cold and flu season. Fatigue can lead to illness. “New studies show that sleep deprivation has detrimental effects on the immune system,” says Ritchie. “Researchers believe that sleep should be considered a vital part of immune function, as it is clear that sleep and immunity are directly related.”

Deficiency in anti-inflammatory interleukin-10 is a key factor in the cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, according to an article recently published in the Journal of Clinical and Vaccine Immunology. Consider a nutritional supplement, like Del-Immune V, that increases the activity of interleukins in the body. Supporting your immune system may help lessen the symptoms of fatigue. Patients who take a regular dose of Del-Immune V to support their immune systems report a significant increase in energy levels.

“This time of year can be exhausting for many reasons,” Ritchie notes. “But a few simple lifestyle changes, healthful diet and immune system support can help you feel more energized throughout the season.”

Recently, I received a letter from a patient who had some trepidation about taking Del-Immune V®. The patient was wary of potential side effects, as that had been a problem with other supplements in the past. I knew exactly where the patient was coming from, as I had a terrible reaction to some Chinese herbs once that really surprised me. It made me a bit leery of a lot of other remedies.

I have been taking Del-Immune V® over the years myself and have recommended it for a lot of my patients, too. What surprises me is that not one single person has called my office with an adverse side effect from taking it. This is most unusual, as I almost always get a call from at least one person taking any particular supplement I give them complaining about an undesirable side effect, and then I usually refund their purchase.

In fact, Del-Immune V® is one supplement that I routinely recommend for patients who are sensitive to other medications or natural treatments. It seems to balance their immune system so they have fewer adverse reactions to other treatments they might need.

Sometimes, if someone is especially reactive, I will use applied kinesiology to test for what they can take. This is the type of muscle testing that a chiropractor can do.

If you are still concerned about potential side effects of Del-Immune V®, start with one capsule per day for a while and make sure you feel good with that before taking more.

Del-Immune V® has another use I have not mentioned. I recommend the product in preparation for vaccines. For my own children, and in many of the children in my practice, I have advised using Del-Immune V® a few days prior to immunization. It has been shown in studies that that using Del-Immune V® increases the body’s response and antibody production, which allows vaccines to be extremely effective.

Flu vaccines are effective about 90 percent of the time for preventing serious flu symptoms such as pneumonia, but vaccination does not prevent the milder symptoms of the flu. However, Del-Immune V® increases our body’s “uptake” of the vaccine, making the vaccine doubly effective without increasing the risk of side effects. Del-Immune V® also reduces the likelihood of someone contracting the flu at all, even in a mild case, if it’s taken regularly during the flu season. So, taking Del-Immune V® before immunization helps increase the effectiveness and taking it consistently after the vaccine reduces the chance of even mild illness.

Partnering with her gifted herd in Gateway, Colorado, Bonnie manages a distinctive process of Equine Facilitated Learning that reveals and revives one’s authentic expression.

Seven years ago I realized my lifelong dream of acquiring a small horse farm in Colorado. A little Paint horse was living next door in the pasture. I noticed that no one ever came to see the Paint or pay any attention to her. Soon, she and I started quite a relationship over the fence. Even though I knew better than to feed other people’s horses, I would give her carrots anyway. At first she acted like she had never eaten them before.

One day while giving her carrots it seemed like she was asking to come live on my side of the fence. I wasn’t sure I was in the market for a horse, and was double sure her owner would not want to sell such a beautiful filly. Getting back into hores after 25 years did not occur to me until that day. Running barrels and going to horse shows to compete seemed to come naturally as a kid, but now I was all grown up with a full load of adult fears. I really knew very little about horses or how to care for them. The little Paint was persistent, so I finally contacted the owner. To my surprise, he did want to sell her, and as soon as possible.

It was highly recommended that a vet check her before I bought her. During the examination, he had a hard time telling her age, but determined she was approximately 18 months old. The seller got her at an auction and knew very little about her. The vet determined she was sound, so I took all the money out of my savings to pay for her. I named the Paint filly Mariah, like the wind.

I soon realized that to train her to ride, I was going to need help. That is where a long list of trainers began. It seemed they all wanted to “break” her, and break her spirit as well. I started studying natural horsemanship and finally found a trainer who would be gentle with both Mariah and me. I worked with that trainer for over three years before we finally came to the conclusion that Mariah just didn’t want to be ridden.

Most of the trainers said she was stubborn (evidently, Paints are known for that trait), but a deeper connection with horses allowed me to consider the possibility that she was simply in pain. On occasion she would be very lame in both her front legs. It seemed to coincide with the weather changing, or after a long run in the pasture.

Several vets examined her and finally she was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis. From what I learned, this disease affects horses that are on very rich feed when they’re young, and the symptoms can come and go, getting worse in three-year intervals. It can also be genetic, so breeding her was not an option. I put her on a diet of grass hay, but she was still in a lush pasture most of the summer, which probably didn’t help her condition.

Then, a close friend suggested I give Del-Immune V® to my horse. I gave Mariah seven per day for the next three years. At first she seemed to exhibit a greater sense of wellbeing. Gradually, she seemed to relinquish all her lameness, and now you will often find her running in the pasture.

I truly believe that Del-Immune V® has contributed to her recovery not only from a physical standpoint, but also emotional. I still have not ridden her, but if she continues to exhibit this pain-free exuberance, we may just ride off into that sunset yet.

If you’re in an office building, school or other crowded place, you probably hear someone coughing right now—it might even be you! Do you wonder what causes lingering coughs? Some people seem to have a cough persistent for weeks, if not months.

When I started my practice 15 years ago, my patient, John, baffled me. He had a genuine case of bronchitis with a mild fever, yellow phlegm, chest congestion and cough. I treated him with the usual medications and he recovered. However, he continued to have a dry, irritated cough for weeks afterward. I’ve seen this a lot since then and I have a few suggestions for getting better sooner.

First, make sure you drink plenty of water. Water moistens the throat and helps the tissues heal quickly. Do you put a band-aid on a healing sore? Drinking water is like a band-aid on the dry, cracked and healing skin of the throat. Think of a dry cough as scratching a healing sore. It itches because it’s healing, but scratching makes it worse. Anything that helps you cough less will help the healing process. Water is easy and effective in this.

You could also use a humidifier. Similar to water you drink, humidity in the air can reduce the itchy irritation of the throat and reduce the amount of coughing allowing healing to occur quickly.

Do you have allergies? My patient, Mary had a lingering cough every winter. She would have a simple cold in the fall and would cough until Spring. When she moved from an older house to a newer one, we discovered she had been allergic to the dust and wood smoke from her older house. Her coughing subsided once she removed herself from that allergen-rich environment.

The most effective way to reduce your exposure to allergens is to start with your bedroom. Some people go so far as to replace wall-to-wall carpet with tile floor and area rugs that are easily cleaned. If you live in a damp place, make sure there is no mold or mildew behind the head of the bed or in the wall of the bedroom. If you have pets, keep them in another part of your house away from where you sleep. These efforts reduce your exposure for eight to 10 hours a day, and that makes a big difference!

I’ve suffered through terribly dry coughs, too. A few years ago, I was struggling with a dry tickle cough. I would have coughing fits in front of my patients, coughing uncontrollably, turning purple, even gagging at times. Now I carry strong peppermint oil with me. Just a dab of it on my tongue will stop a coughing fit immediately. It’s not very pleasant, but it works.

It goes without saying that if you are still smoking, it’s time to quit! Coughs are aggravated by cigarette smoke. There is no “safe” cigarette that is OK to smoke.

Of course, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Del-Immune V® will help strengthen your immune system to lessen your chances of picking up respiratory bugs in the first place. A healthy immune system is also better equipped to deal with allergies and post-viral cough. I recommend Del-Immune V® to all my patients seeking relief from those annoying, lingering coughs.

I will never forget the day my baby woke up with a terrible rash. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a medical doctor or a fisherman’s wife, having a sick baby is very scary. My six-week-old baby was covered in red welts. Though she seemed happy in every other way, something was obviously wrong. Since I’m a medical doctor and a mother, I was able to examine her. I noticed she appeared to have the rash of chicken pox. This was a real surprise, since chicken pox normally affects children older than she was.

I had been introduced to Del-Immune V® by a friend and colleague; and I had the impression that it was a very safe and effective natural supplement. I decided to go ahead and start her on Del-Immune V®. I mixed one capsule three times a day in a bottle of milk. By the following morning her rash had completely disappeared! I continued to give her Del-Immune V® using one capsule a day for the next week. I discontinued the treatment once there was no further evidence of the illness. I was satisfied that not only was she completely better from the original infection—which normally would have taken two weeks to get over—but also that she was unaffected by the supplement in any other way. She did not display any side effects whatsoever.

Since my first experience with Del-Immune V®, I have used it to treat many medical conditions and found it to be helpful. Not everyone who takes Del-Immune V® has dramatic results, but I have not had anybody experience any side effects, either. I recommend it to patients with any autoimmune condition, including rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

In Fall of 2007 we met a young Special Forces soldier and his team who were using Del-Immune V® to stay healthy during training, and later in Iraq. We made a commitment to keep this young soldier and his team supplied with Del-Immune V® during their tour of duty in Iraq. We’re calling this soldier “Todd” as we cannot give his real name for security reasons. After returning home to Colorado, Todd was happy to share his experience in Iraq with us.

He returned to the U.S. on June 1, 2008 and is now attending the University of Colorado, earning a degree in International Relations and will graduate in December.

While in Iraq, Todd’s unit was a Special Forces team called Operation Detachment Alpha. Todd’s team has been together for 10 years—he joined them in 2005. “I was a demolitions expert,” he said. “When we came across a munitions dump, for example, I would blow it up. We also helped Iraqis build things like wells, toilets and domestic infrastructure.”

Todd explained that there were 12 people on his team. We made sure Todd had a steady supply of Del-Immune V® for himself and any of his team members who wanted it. “The only time I was sick was when I first arrived,” he recalled. “I think my body reacted to everything in the air. There was a huge amount of industrial pollution along with thick dirt and dust from the desert.”

Todd began by taking four capsules of Del-Immune V® four times a day and reported feeling better within a few days. “After that I never got sick again, “ he said. He added that some other team members didn’t take the product until they were sick. “The guys that took it got over colds faster, or had a faster recovery from getting sick from eating bad food.”

The Special Forces team stayed busy with 120 combat missions over an eight-month period. Mission objectives ranged from capturing enemies to digging wells in villages. “We were lucky we didn’t lose anyone,” he recalls. “One guy was wounded when he was shot in the helmet. Other teams lost as many as three out of 12 members.

“We wore 60 pounds of body armor and carried about 100 pounds of gear.” He added that he depended on Del-Immune V® as much as his gear for protection. “It was cold where we were. A lot of guys got sick, but the ones that took Del-Immune V® got better quickly. I never got sick.” Todd even made believers of many of the army doctors who began taking it after Todd told them about his experience with the product.

Todd is currently working three jobs and taking a full course load and still depends on Del-Immune V® to keep him healthy with his packed schedule. In the meantime, he is regularly called out for special military missions, and said that since he returned from Iraq he’s been to Nepal, Thailand and Slovenia. Todd added that he may be deployed to Afghanistan within the next year. “With Del-Immune V®, I can handle my workload and still stay well after overseas travel that comes on short notice,” he said.”
