Soviet Cold-War era Chief Health Minister and scientist, General Vsevolod Ogarkov, had no idea the fruits of his bio-warfare research program would be used by 21st century American doctors and patients for immune system support during the winter cold and flu season. Dr. Ogarkov’s team were the first researchers to successfully modify probiotics, also known as “friendly” bacteria, as immune system supplements.

The probiotic-derived supplement Del-Immune V® is the culmination of Russian and U.S research that began 30 years ago with Dr. Ogarkov’s discoveries. Originally developed in the bio-warfare labs of the former Soviet Union, the immune-support supplement was first developed to protect Soviet soldiers and citizens from bio-warfare agents. Modern research confirms Dr. Ogarkov’s findings that the grandchild of his original research, Del-Immune V, triggers an immediate immune response to help protect users not only from bio-toxins, but seasonal illness and other viruses and infections as well.

Scientifically known as Lactobacillus bacteria, probiotics are a traditional part of the Eastern-European food culture. Probiotics support the body in dozens of functions, including healing and maintenance of the impaired immune system and digestive tract.

Today, Del-Immune V is the only probiotic-derived products in the U.S. made from the original Russian formula and offers a natural way to build up your immune system during the cold and flu season.

“Even though probiotics were first discovered in the early 20th century, we discover new uses for them every day,” said Dr. Liubov Shynkarenko, Ph.D. and Vice-President of Pure Research Products, distributor of Del-Immune V.

Early in her career, Shynkarenko, a Russian-trained microbiologist, helped develop the product for the USSR and discovered that Del-Immune V could be helpful in supporting the immune system during cancer treatment and other serious health challenges such as virus infections.

“What was developed in the old Soviet Union during the Cold War is now being used to keep people healthy all over the world,” said Dr. Shynkaranko.

“I have observed that patients who support their immune system with Del-Immune V significantly reduce the number of times they get sick over the winter season and also show decreased duration of colds and flu,” said Elin Ritchie M.D., who practices integrative medicine in Taos, N.M.

With the European Union poised to regulate probiotics, and with probiotic supplement sales increasing dramatically in the United States, Americans need to know what they’re buying, and how these products can affect their health.

“Currently, there are not these types of regulations in the U.S. As European regulations raise the bar in the probiotic industry world wide, U.S. consumers are still faced with a confusing array of immune system supplements, ingredients and health benefits claims,” said Russian-trained microbiologist Dr. Liubov Shynkarenko, a veteran of Soviet Cold War-era bio-chemical warfare research that led to the development of modern probiotics as immune system supplements. “From moderate health imbalances to serious illnesses, different strains and combinations of probiotics will produce different results with liver, heart and other body systems affected by toxicity.”

Now Vice President of Research for the Del-Immune V® probiotic product line, Dr. Shynkarenko recommends the following tips for consumers looking to achieve the most effective results from immune system supplements:

•	There are varieties of probiotic strains that can have different effects on each individual. Schedule a micro flora profile with your family health physician or health professional to identify the best kind of probiotic to take based on the specific kinds of bacteria that differ in everyone’s body. These strains and combinations efficacy and specificity are what the European Union will be regulating through clinical trials.

•	To ensure that the product you are taking includes live cultures, look at the ingredients. The most popular strains of probiotics today belong to Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium families. Often, they are only identified on the label by their first initial such as L. or B. Your doctor can help you identify the correct strain for your body and condition.

•	Confirm that it is a legitimate company with a credible website, backed up with extensive research and scientific articles on the products as well as testimonials from customers and healthcare providers.

“With Europe and eventually the U.S. conducting trials and regulating the probiotics industry, better products will be developed, and consumers will have access to more information,” said Dr. Shynkarenko. “This will lead to better understanding, and give doctors the knowledge they need to advise patients on the proper strains and combinations of probiotic supplements, which will vary between individuals.”

Steve Sanderlin, DVM, is a veterinarian with holistic animal training. Dr. Sanderlin practices in Boulder County, Colorado, and attended veterinary school at Texas A&M. Dr. Sanderlin will answer questions about use of Del-Immune V® in animals, and can be contacted at SSandvm@aol.com

I’ve observed that with many animal health issues, there is an underlying compromised and depressed immune system. After being introduced to Del-immune V, I started recommending it for pets to provide immune support in conjunction with targeted treatment of many health issues. My clinical observation was that the product provided immediate immune support during all types of animal health issues, whether the condition was fungal, bacterial or viral.

In broad terms, we see a faster recovery rate with health issues when an animal’s immune system is supported with Del-Immune V. Another important characteristic I have observed is that this product modulates and balances rather than over-stimulating the immune system. This is important for animals with hyper-sensitivities. There are variables, but I have also seen the product help balance an over-active immune system.

Del-Immune V is ideal for immune support with many treatment protocols I recommend, and I have never observed side-effects from the product. I use it to support the immune system adjunctively during treatments including; cancer, ear and eye infections, respiratory tract infections and skin conditions to name a few. The product is cost effective and gives a big return for a small investment in a pet’s health.

Young puppies and kittens from shelters and mills frequently show up with respiratory infections and immune stress. Adding immune support to specific prescription treatment gets them back on track faster.

On the more life-threatening end of the spectrum, I see dogs with chronic, debilitating illness like cancer. I have observed that supporting the immune system with Del-Immune V during treatment helps the body fight cancer cells and also provides help with secondary immune problems relating to bacterial and fungal infections.

My best results are dose-related. For general maintenance in puppies and cats, I use half a capsule to a full capsule twice a day. For acute immune issues, smaller animals receive up to four capsules a day. With adult cat and small dogs, I suggest one to two capsules daily for maintenance, and up to six a day for immune support during acute problems. Medium and large dogs can have two capsules a day for maintenance and six to eight capsules a day during acute illness. I give very large dogs two Del-Immune V a day for maintenance, and up to four capsules twice a day during acute illness. Users can reduce doses after about two weeks.

The largest dose I’ve given for immune support was eight capsules a day to a chocolate lab with prostate cancer. In addition to cancer treatment, the dog’s immune system was supported with additional supplements and a grain-free diet. This pup had a high quality of life for more than a year after his diagnosis, in spite of the fact that dogs with this condition would typically live six months or less.

Sometimes I don’t have enough energy to carry on with the plans for my day or my week. Recently I had a long week with big plans for the weekend. However, due to many nights with disrupted sleep on-call for medical emergencies and children waking me when I was home, I was exhausted, tired, and genuinely fatigued. Imagine feeling this way for several months or years. In most cases tiredness and fatigue are associated with sleeplessness.

Persistent fatigue, pain and sleep difficulties have been common in clinical practice for decades, even centuries. Fatigue is a typical symptom in the modern world, with up to half of the general population reporting fatigue in large surveys. At least 20 percent of doctor visits are from those seeking treatment for fatigue.

New studies show that sleep deprivation also has detrimental effects on the immune system. Researchers believe that sleep should be considered a vital part of immune function, as it is clear that there is a direct relationship between sleep and immunity.

Sleep is a process essential to life. Both infection-associated and normal sleep are regulated, in part, by immune mediators called “cytokines,” which function as switches in the immune system. Research also shows that sleep is altered during illness. The brain responds to infection by altering physical processes, including sleep.

Fatigue is one of the first signs that any organism has lost control of the mechanisms of energy production and consumption. A great deal of energy is used to fight immune weakness and sleep deprivation. What’s more, energy problems and fatigue connect directly with decreased mitochondrial function – the “power plants” within each human cell that generate the energy our body needs to function. Clearly, fatigue patients need to correct sleep disorders to restore immune function and mitochondrial deficits.

Fatigue, continual tiredness, and even Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are debilitating conditions that can destroy careers and relationships. In my practice of family and alternative medicine over the last 16 years, I have treated many patients with varying degrees of this chronic and destructive illness. Fatigue, especially CFS, is difficult because in the past, the medical profession discounted it as not really existing at all. Some patients in my care are demoralized by the compassionless way they have been treated by other doctors in the past. Many remain exhausted and depressed after trying many solutions. I believe that immune system support might be part of the answer in treating these conditions.

Medicine is beginning to truly study CFS and the factors that contribute to this mysterious and chronic condition. We now understand that it is not “just in your head.” In the past, many patients were sent to psychiatrists to deal with these problems.

A recently published article in the Journal of Clinical and Vaccine Immunology (April 2010) concludes that Anti-Inflammatory Interleukin-10 (a super highway in the immune system) is a key factor in the cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. We know from previous research that Del-Immune V® directly increases the activity of Interleukins (super highways in the immune system) in the body to help support the immune system.

By supporting their immune systems with Del-Immune V, users may lessen the symptoms of fatigue and CFS. Research is starting to support this clinical finding. Many patients who take a regular dose of Del-Immune V to support their immune systems see a significant increase in energy levels, interest in life activities and increased satisfaction in their relationships, probably due to increased energy.

So, how much Del-Immune V is a good dose for immune support when battling fatigue? While doses of 2 capsules per day are good for maintenance, I find that higher doses for immune system support can be more effective. I recommend starting with 3 capsules twice a day for 2 weeks, then dropping to 3 capsules once a day for the next few months.

What is interesting about Del-Immune V is that we find an even better response when brief “treatment holidays” are used. That is, patients intentionally skip two days per month to re-establish the body’s sensitivity and response to the product. I usually recommend that my patients miss the last two days of a month and start up again on the first day of the following months, unless they will be traveling at that time. Particularly reassuring is the lack of side effects from this supplement. It seems that virtually anyone can take it without adverse effects.

Chemotherapy and radiation patients should take note; Del-Immune V has been shown to increase the overall function of the immune system. When it is beaten down by current cancer therapies, Del-Immune V helps re-build the immune defenses of the body. It assists with new growth of healthy tissues and helps prevent the all-to-common secondary infections that are often the final straw for a depleted body.

The October 2008 issue of Science Daily reported that, “Studies presented at the American College of Gastroenterology’s 73rd Annual Scientific Meeting highlight the safety and efficacy of probiotics in improving symptoms and normalizing bowel movement frequency in patients suffering from constipation or diarrhea related to IBS.”

“A systematic review of the efficacy of probiotics in IBS that included 19 randomized controlled trials in 1,628 IBS patients found that probiotics are effective in IBS, but we do not have enough information to be sure whether there is one probiotic that is particularly effective or whether combinations of probiotics are required,” said Dr. Paul Moayyedi, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, NY.

What is IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder of abdominal discomfort or pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. This discomfort, pain, or cramping can be a dull ache or it can be severe, according to IBSanswers.net, a web resource for those who suffer from IBS.

Types of IBS

Doctors distinguish different forms of IBS based on bowel patterns reported by patients. Some people with IBS suffer from constipation, diarrhea, or both.2 Symptoms can vary by person, but the three types of IBS are:

• IBS with constipation

• IBS with diarrhea

• Mixed IBS with both constipation and diarrhea

Affecting 25 to 55 million people in the United States, IBS results in 2.5 to 3.5 million yearly visits to physicians. Twenty to 40 percent of all visits to gastroenterologists are due to symptoms of irritable bowel. Not surprisingly, dozens of research studies have been conducted in search of answers about IBS, and how to minimize the discomfort associated with this common syndrome. Several studies have examined probiotics, meaning the “friendly” bacteria that reside in our intestinal tracts. The findings of these studies indicate that probiotics may play a role in treating and preventing IBS.

The British Nutrition Foundation carried out a review of probiotics and health in 2008. The review states that, “Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms have been found to be reduced by consuming probiotics.”

Research published in the March, 2009 issue of Postgraduate Medicine concluded that after an eight-week study, probiotics could, “Improve the severity and frequency of symptoms associated with IBS.”

“The role of the enteric flora is evidently an area of great potential in IBS; we are on the threshold of a new era of research and therapy for this common disorder” said Dr. E.M. Quigley of the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre of the National University of Ireland.

Why do probiotics work for IBS?

Probiotics have had more than a century to prove themselves. The concept first emerged in 1907, when Elie Metchnikoff, the Nobel Prize winning scientist, attributed the longevity of a Bulgarian peasant village to its inhabitants’ consumption of live yogurt. Since then a number of well designed clinical trials have shown beneficial effects of probiotics in the treatment of travelers’ diarrhea, acute diarrhea in children and antibiotic associated diarrhea. Trials also suggest that such bacteria can have a beneficial effect on the immune system, as reported on the helpforibs.com website.

Some researchers theorize that one cause of IBS may have to do with the bacteria, or “flora” balance of the intestinal tract. These scientists think that when “good” and “bad” bacteria get out of balance, the good bacteria can no longer manage the bad bacteria populations. If bad bacteria overwhelm good, this may cause inflammation, diarrhea, and other symptoms of IBS. This condition is called “SIBO,” or “Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth.” Regular doses of “good bacteria,” or probiotics, may help to regulate, balance and control overgrowth of “bad bacteria.”

Many of our customers have contacted us for more information on Delpro™, our live probiotic product. Question topics include whether Delpro should be refrigerated, and whether traveling through the mail system damages the product. Probiotics are living organisms and should be refrigerated when stored, but Delpro is manufactured in such a way that an excess of live CFU’s, or “colony-forming units” are built into each dose. This means that even if some of the CFUs are lost during transit, Delpro still delivers 10 billion CFU’s per dose by the time it reaches customers. We know that Delpro can remain unrefrigerated for up to 30 days, so travelers may carry Delpro when refrigeration is not available.

Since my first experience with Del-Immune V®, I have advised it for many medical conditions and found it to be helpful. Not everyone who takes Del-Immune V® has dramatic results, but I have not had anybody experience any side effects, either. I recommend it for any autoimmune condition, including rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. I also suggest it for chronic infections like Hepatitis C.

When treating Hepatitis C, I have combined Del-Immune V® with a Chinese formula that contains milk thistle. One of my patients has decreased his viral load from 70,000 to 600 after three months on Del-Immune V®. Even Ribaviran, the interferon-based treatment currently in use for Hepatitis C, is not expected to show that much change or impact on the virus in the human body.

About 50 percent of my patients with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue showed improvement when taking Del-Immune V® as a supplement to their treatment. The patients claimed they had more energy and generally felt better.

If it seems like it’s just harder to roll out of bed every morning when the temperature drops and sunrise comes later, you’re not imagining things – and you’re not alone. Whether they have chronic fatigue, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or an old-fashioned case of the seasonal blues, many people experience fatigue when seasons change and the weather cools.

Fatigue is common, with up to 50 percent of adults reporting feeling chronically tired according to several recent surveys. In fact, at least 20 percent of doctor visits are made by people looking for relief from fatigue, one study reports. The season’s effect on fatigue and depression is well-known, with the American Academy of Family Physicians reporting six out of every 100 Americans suffer from winter depression or SAD.

“Shorter days, darker skies, colder weather, poor sleep habits, and the stresses that come with the busy holidays and months at the end of the year can leave many people feeling fatigued and depressed at this time of year,” says Dr. Elin Ritchie, a specialist in family alternative medicine.

Even if your case of the seasonal blues is mild, it still makes sense to take steps to help yourself feel better – prolonged fatigue and depression can affect your overall health. Here are some tips for fighting fatigue:

Get as much (safe) sun exposure as possible. Open drapes and blinds as soon as you get up to allow sunlight into your home. If you can, take a morning walk. Get as much time outdoors as your schedule and the weather permit. Sunlight stimulates the production of vitamin D in your body and also benefits your mental health. Remember, though, to use sunscreen, as the sun’s ultraviolet rays can still damage your skin, even in winter.

Stick to a reliable sleep schedule as much as possible. Go to bed and rise at the same time every day. And make sure your bedroom is conducive to sleep – declutter, choose comfortable and comforting linens, and turn off the TV.

Choose foods that are high in protein. Fruits and vegetables provide many healthful benefits and definitely belong in your diet. But for long-lasting energy, you’ll get more benefit from lean protein (like chicken and fish) and complex carbohydrates such as whole-grain bread or beans. Avoid too much sugar, no matter how tempting those holiday treats appear – sugar’s energy rush is usually followed by an energy drop that can leave you feeling more fatigued.

Find ways to relax. The cooler seasons can be a very stressful time and stress can keep you awake at night. To combat natural levels of stress, find activities that relax you, whether it’s container gardening indoors, meditation or aromatherapy. Relieving stress can help improve sleep patterns.

It’s also important that you support your immune system, especially during cold and flu season. Fatigue can lead to illness. “New studies show that sleep deprivation has detrimental effects on the immune system,” says Ritchie. “Researchers believe that sleep should be considered a vital part of immune function, as it is clear that sleep and immunity are directly related.”

Deficiency in anti-inflammatory interleukin-10 is a key factor in the cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, according to an article recently published in the Journal of Clinical and Vaccine Immunology. Consider a nutritional supplement, like Del-Immune V, that increases the activity of interleukins in the body. Supporting your immune system may help lessen the symptoms of fatigue. Patients who take a regular dose of Del-Immune V to support their immune systems report a significant increase in energy levels.

“This time of year can be exhausting for many reasons,” Ritchie notes. “But a few simple lifestyle changes, healthful diet and immune system support can help you feel more energized throughout the season.”

We’ve received many inquiries about the use of Del-Immune V® for the prevention of seasonal bugs and many other illnesses. The question is whether we have any documentation at this time. No, we don’t currently have documentation verifying this connection medically.

Here is our official position at the moment: Del-Immune V® provides immediate immune system support. The activity is non-specific, which means the support covers a broad range of immune responses. This has been evidenced by the results reported from our users. The immune help from Del-Immune V® ranges from seasonal bugs and sinus problems to chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. So we anticipate this product will be beneficial for immune system support even with various Flu strains, but again, we do not have the documentation yet!

Recently, I received a letter from a patient who had some trepidation about taking Del-Immune V®. The patient was wary of potential side effects, as that had been a problem with other supplements in the past. I knew exactly where the patient was coming from, as I had a terrible reaction to some Chinese herbs once that really surprised me. It made me a bit leery of a lot of other remedies.

I have been taking Del-Immune V® over the years myself and have recommended it for a lot of my patients, too. What surprises me is that not one single person has called my office with an adverse side effect from taking it. This is most unusual, as I almost always get a call from at least one person taking any particular supplement I give them complaining about an undesirable side effect, and then I usually refund their purchase.

In fact, Del-Immune V® is one supplement that I routinely recommend for patients who are sensitive to other medications or natural treatments. It seems to balance their immune system so they have fewer adverse reactions to other treatments they might need.

Sometimes, if someone is especially reactive, I will use applied kinesiology to test for what they can take. This is the type of muscle testing that a chiropractor can do.

If you are still concerned about potential side effects of Del-Immune V®, start with one capsule per day for a while and make sure you feel good with that before taking more.

By maintaining a constant temperature, the human gut provides an appealing habitat for many bacteria to grow. While the human body hosts trillions of bacteria known as normal intestinal flora, about 85 percent of these bacteria are considered harmless, some even beneficial. Our normal flora produces essential nutrients and generates by-products that help reduce the risk of developing certain cancers, digestive disorders, metabolic syndromes as well as liver and heart disease.

Aging and alterations in the intestine’s environment caused by antibiotic use disrupt the digestive system’s balance. In the case of antibiotics, the medicine kills everything living in the gut, including harmful bacteria as well as healthy intestinal flora. Killing off healthy flora allows harmful intestinal bacteria to gain proportional dominance. This relative imbalance of microbes in the gut sets the stage for a wide range of unhealthy conditions.

A 2003 study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University looked at the connection between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and intestinal bacteria over-growth. Researchers concluded that intestinal bacteria play a significant role in hepatic insulin resistance and NAFLD.

Researchers at the Imperial College of London recently surmised that altering the intestine’s microbial environment could be effective in addressing insulin resistance. Researchers found that genetics is responsible for the presence of a specific type of microbe in mice intestines. This microbial excess predisposed mice to insulin resistance and NAFLD.

Researchers are hopeful that their observations of a mouse’s intestinal environment will translate into improving human health. When the mice in this study were fed a high fat diet, the microbes transformed choline, the nutrient essential for metabolizing fat, into methylamines. Scientists believe methylamines, which can only be produced by the microbes in the intestines, lead to insulin resistance. In addition, because choline is needed to transport fat out of the liver, altering choline metabolism leads to fat accumulation, and in turn, NAFLD. By changing the balance of intestinal microbes, it will be possible to reduce someone’s chances of becoming insulin resistant, developing NAFLD or suffering from associated problems.

Insulin is a hormone released by the pancreas in response to elevated blood sugar levels. By pushing glucose out of the bloodstream and into the body’s cells where it is converted into energy, insulin keeps blood glucose levels in check. Cells that are insulin resistant lead to decreased energy production, resulting in fatigue. High amounts of insulin in the blood increase triglycerides, which deposit fatty acids in the liver. In prolonged cases of insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus develops. Being overweight, leading a sedentary lifestyle, eating a diet rich in sugar and fat and a preponderance of intestinal microbes all promote insulin resistance.

Probiotics utilize beneficial bacteria to support the health of the gastrointestinal system by suppressing the growth of, or destroying undesirable bacteria. The regular use of probiotics can re-colonize the gastrointestinal tract with enough normal flora to prevent potentially damaging microbes from gaining dominance. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins 2003 study evaluating probiotic use to improve NAFLD suggested the inclusion of probiotics in a plan to prevent additional accumulation of fat in the liver.

Living with microbes in the gut is a normal occurrence in the human gastrointestinal system. However, the recent determination that an intestinal microbial imbalance encourages insulin resistance and NAFLD demonstrates that people concerned with these conditions should aim to preserve or build up healthy intestinal flora. Used around the world for gastrointestinal health, the regular use of probiotics is the most acknowledged way to support a favorable balance of intestinal microbes.
